Don’t Freeze! Survive the Ethics of a Mixed Reality Escape Room

A mixed reality escape room refers to a space that traps the player using a combination of physical and virtual contraptions and puzzles, which the player must solve in order to escape from the space for the sake of survival. An alternate reality story usually serves to bridge the physical and virtual context layers of the escape room, providing the reason for the room’s existence, and the clues as means of escape. In this intense and hands-on session, participants will experience a mixed reality escape room with an alternate reality story that references the ethics of George Orwell’s 1984. This mixed reality escape room experience is co-designed by Sherry Jones and Stephen Getter to demonstrate how to incorporate physical and virtual contraptions and puzzles in an escape room to create a meaningful, interactive experience.
